REVIEWS: "...CAROUSEL offers a fresh display of fiction, poetry and artistic endeavors each spring and fall. The prose features are engulfed by white space and frequently alternate with visual images, making each page seem like an experience in itself. Expect montages, graphic novel strips, and, at times, a visual sensory overload."
– Utne Reader (Elizabeth Ryan, on C20)"Some journals have managed to shake off their dusty academic roots to become bold laboratories for exciting, new – and just plain good – writing... under new direction, this twice yearly has remade itself with constructivist design and over-the-top printing, not to mention content ranging from relative newcomers to celebrity guests Devendra Banhart and Shary Boyle."
– Eye Weekly Vol. 15, No. 10 2005 (Brian Joseph Davis)"Another ripe rip is issue #18 of CAROUSEL, a lit mag that comes out of the University of Guelph in Ontario. It looks slick as hell and the format—one page of writing/one page of art (more or less) is really easy to consume. The quality of effort is extremely high throughout and it includes such writers as bill bissett, plus such artsos as Devendra Banhart. Extremely check-worthy."
– Arthur No. 22, 2006 (Byron Coley & Thurston Moore)"...CAROUSEL is a delicious paper treat created with care for the tasteful reader with a ravenous appetite for contemporary culture."
– David Morand (Naked Air Literary Review)"I like the drawings in here. Whoever picks them has an eye for what intrigues them and the gumption to call them worthy."
– Jim Munroe, No Media Kings"...it really looks good and is a delight to hold in the hands, and there is some particularily strong text inside... CAROUSEL is a fine read."
– review of C17: Broken Pencil No. 28 2005 (Jon Pressick)"CAROUSEL presents ideas using the full spectrum of print communication. Poetry, prose, comics, drawing, photography and graphic design are all given equal space to commingle and breed new mongrel modes in a single evolving language."
– Marc Ngui, Bumblenut Pictures (creator of the graphic novel, The Unexpurgated Tale of Lordie Jones, Conundrum Press, 2005)"I picked up the latest issue of CAROUSEL, and am really impressed by the quality – both of the magazine as an object, but also the work inside – wow!"
– derek beaulieu (author of with wax, Coach House, 2003; Frogments from the Frag Pool, Mercury, 2005 and fractal economies, Talonbooks, 2006)"...quirky and curious..."
– review of C18: The NewPages Literary Magazine Reviews (R.T. Duffer)"...my aging eyes can't take the tiny type-face!"
– review of C17: Literary Magazine Review Vol. 23, No. 4 (J. Kates)"CAROUSEL is a fantastic arts/literary annual. It is simply one of the best in the country."

"Congratulations on publishing hybrid pieces of every sort. It's high time someone found a home for all these bastard children. You are an island for misfit toys."
– Milo Rutherford
ABOUT:
: : : : CAROUSEL is a hybrid literary & arts magazine. We are interested in representing both new and established artists, with a specific focus on positioning Canadian talent within an international context. The magazine may be seen as a place for creative cross-pollination between global and Canadian creators. We are currently distributed throughout Canada and the USA (see below for distribution contacts).
: : : : Founded in 1983, CAROUSEL has published 25 varied editions to date. In that time, the magazine has generally been published on a yearly basis, though it experienced a brief hiatus at the end of the 1990s. The resurrected magazine resumed publishing in 2001, and we have since published ten new volumes. In 2004, we increased our publishing schedule to twice annually (new issues are now published in the Spring and Fall).: : : : CAROUSEL underwent a visual facelift in 2002, aiming for a style that was more in line with its current philosophy, one that emphasizes a merging of textual & visual content. The format for the publication is 9.5" x 7.5", 72 pages in length.
: : : : CAROUSEL's exceptional and energetic look has been increasingly well-received on the newsstands, and the magazine has twice been awarded with an Honourable Mention for Best Art Direction for an Entire Issue by The National Magazine Awards Foundation.
